Foreign investments in Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the African countries that receive and allow foreign investors in large numbers. According to Tanzania Investment Report 2022, Tanzania recorded a growth of 26.1 percent in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow attributable to continued Government policies of improving the investment climate to attract more FDI inflows.

The investment opportunities available in Tanzania are as follows:

    • 1. Manufacturing- this sector contribute about 18.1% foreign exchange to the government. You can establish SEZs/EPZs, Industrial parks and logistics centres; motor vehicle and motorcycle assembly plants and spare parts production facilities for domestic and regional markets; Construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant; development of iron and steel industries; Agro-industries and agro-processing to add value to agricultural, livestock, forestry and fisheries products; Manufacture of other food products (e.g. bread, sugar, chocolate, pasta, coffee, nuts and spices); The manufacture of bottled and canned soft drinks, fruit juices, beer, and wines, etc.
      2. Agriculture - Tanzania has 44 million hectares of arable land with an estimated 29.4 million hectares suitable for irrigation.
    • In this sector you can invest
        - Undertaking in large-scale commercial farming of crops such as sugarcane, rice, wheat, coffee, tea, sunflower, pulses, floriculture, cotton, sisal, grape, simsim and maize.
        - sugarcane farming and sugar production.
        - Agro-Industries and Agro-processing
        - Development of out growers to complement the sources of raw materials for the industries as appropriate
        - Expansion and improvement of irrigation systems; improvement of R&D in crops cultivation.

      3. Tourism

      Tanzania is one of the countries with many tourist attractions. A good example is Serengeti National Park with Animal Migration – the leading National Park in Africa in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Other attraction includes Kilimanjaro Mountain and Ngorongoro Crater is among the World Heritage Sites.
      Some of the available opportunities include construction of Tourist Hotels in towns, game parks as well as along the 850 miles coast line of mainland Tanzania and the beautiful shores of the spice Island of Zanzibar; establishment of leisure parks and investing in conference tourism facilities.

      4. Mining

      The key available mineral deposits include coal, copper, diamonds, gold, nickel, silver, uranium, and Tanzanite gemstone, which is found nowhere in the world other than Tanzania. There are variety of gemstones, including aquamarine, garnet, ruby, sapphire, tourmaline and tanzanite. In terms of minerals, it includes iron ore, soda ash, coal, clay soil, uranium and gold.
      5. Other areas of investment in Tanzania are such as Pharmaceuticals where by one can establish of pharmaceutical or/and medical equipment plants; livestocks such as Establishment of dairy farms and facilities for milk processing fishing, energy, oil and gas, real estate development, telecommunication and finance.
  • The government through the Tanzania Investment Centre grants Certificates of Incentives for Foreign investors with the minimum investment value of a project of at least US$ 500,000 for projects which are wholly owned by foreign investors or if a joint venture.

    The required document for an investor to be granted certificate of Incentives are as follows: -

  • A certified copy of the Certificate of company Incorporation
  • A copy of the company’s Memorandum and Articles of Association.
  • A dully filled TIC application forms which are issued by the Centre
  • Project business plan
  • Evidence of sufficient finance capital available to implement the project
  • Evidence of project location
  • Company Board Resolution to register the project with TIC.
  • An overall covering letter to which all the above are attached.
  • An entity granted certificate of incentives is entitled to an initial automatic immigrant quota of up to five persons during the start up period.
