FOREIGN MARRIAGE REGISTRATION IN TANZANIA

A Tanzanian citizen has the right to marry in any country he finds a suitable partner to marry. However, if this marriage takes place outside Tanzania, the bridegroom must satisfy themselves the followings: -

    • i. Whether the marriage to be contracted is in a form required or permitted by the law of the country where the marriage is to be contracted?
      ii. Does each of the parties had, at the time of the marriage, capacity to marry under the law of the country of his or her domicile;
      iii. Do both parties freely and voluntarily consented to the marriage or, where either party did not freely and voluntarily consent to the marriage, the parties have freely and voluntarily consummated the marriage? And
      iv. where either of the parties is a citizen of the United Republic or is domiciled in Mainland Tanzania, both parties had capacity to marry according to the marriage law of Tanzania?

  • Application for Registration

    An application for registration is made to the Registrar-General by one of the spouses. The application should be accompanied by the following documents and information’s:

    • i. a marriage certificate issued in that country or such other evidence proving the existence of the marriage- Where any such certificate is not in English or Kiswahili it shall be accompanied by a translation into English or Kiswahili certified to be correct by a consular officer or notary public.
      ii. Birth certificate of both spouses
      iii. Copy of Passport/ID of both spouses
      iv. Copy of Father’s ID
      v. Marrying party information such as names, date of birth, country of residence
      vi. Marrying part father’s names
      vii. Married party information such as names, date of birth, country of residence
      viii. Place where the marriage was contracted
      ix. Married part father’s names
      x. Marriage type such as Monogamy, Polygamy or possible polygamy
      xi. Marriage form such as civil, Islamic or Christian or Buddhism or Hindu
      xii. Two witness full particulars and their ID

  • Exclusion

    This application exclude any Marriages contracted in the presence of the registrar in an Embassy, High Commission or consulate of the United Republic in any country which has been designated by the Minister by adhering to the procedure of contracting of civil marriages.
